Rewind

The Antistatic is a column about a core; a core of artistic development through the application of multi-media -- namely video. It occurs to me that I may have started the monthly article to justify video as an art form. Since its inception, I’ve found my own justification in the artwork produced this year at my young motion graphics studio. I find the excitement of creation in the eyes and voices of my friends, fellow club members, and co-workers.

Otaku Motion worked on some very hot projects including character animation for a local plumbing company, advertising for the arts, paid documentary filmmaking, and tons of image-driven majesty -- some of which was accomplished overnight! You haven’t cut vids until you’ve done it at 4 a.m.; and 4 a.m. and me are certainly not strangers.

At the same time I’ve been able to streamline my business and life. I have more time for fun productive stuff like the CHL and look forward to all of the adventures that springtime generally bring.(Hey Liz! How ‘bout another trip to Centralia?)

It’s going to be a good year. The editorial staff at Subject2Change asked writers to recap the year. Recap? I’m not one for hanging on to the past these days, but here goes!

I started out defining what I do -- motion graphics -- in a corporately suggestive article about the difference between cell and modern animation (August 2007) . We reviewed the ins and outs of what makes animation realistic and sung the praises of Adobe After Effects. Before, during, and since then, motionographer.com has been my inspiration and updates on the motion graphic world. I invite you to become a regular to their RSS feed.

Later I approached an all-inclusive topic of how to feel your worth and get what you’re worth (September-October 2007). This is true in all forms of art, especially those applied to business. I hope that readers felt empowered and ready to take on the world with fair compensation and value!

Then my copy of Adobe CS3 Production Premium arrived in the mail (November 2007). After several upgrades and machine swaps, I was running the new packages smoothly (until Leopard, of course… grrrr). The article reviewed individual applications in Adobe’s power package. Since then, I’ve pretty much written off Adobe Premiere as a substandard editing software (to Final Cut) and enjoyed using Soundbooth and Bridge on my new MacPro, fully equipped to handle the latest in core video suites.

When the grey skies encroached, I ran for the hills, found a warm cabin, and wrote a hopefully thawing article based on a variety of sources from psychological to temporal (December 2007). The winter has come on only slightly more ferocious since you learned how to “beat winter blues,” and I hope it helped! Here’s to blue skies and more time outdoors coming soon to a Susquehanna-side near you!

I certainly hope that you enjoy my little corner of Subject2Change. Write allen@otakumotion.com and tell me what you want to read about. Video? Tech? Software? Innovations? Style? If you want it, I’m there. I’ll even throw up some tutorials if there’s an interest. Take care of yourselves and happy New Year!
